It seems amazing that less than one month after the earthquake in Haiti, the attention to this poor country has almost disappeared from most of the front pages of our local newspaper as well as the headlines from the media reports. Such is not the case for Mission to Haiti Canada. More than ever the efforts of countless volunteers within Mission to Haiti Canada’s organization have been busy answering emails and phone calls with steady streams of offers for assistance. From television and radio personalities supporting our Mission, to people across Canada, United States and overseas contacting us about getting involved in upcoming Mission Teams the response has been heart-warming. We have decided to list some of the efforts that are underway at this time. The listing certainly is not all inclusive and it continues to grow with the new needs that appear each day.
At this time, the following significant short term needs are being dealt with by Mission to Haiti Canada here at home:
- Multiple donations of tarps and tents have been made, but so much more are needed to temporarily house and protect the Haitians from the upcoming rainy season and inclement weather conditions.
- Donations of crutches and hockey bags for transporting the crutches are currently being assembled.
- Medical supplies which were coming in frantically right after the disaster have slowed down somewhat but the need in Haiti for these resources certainly have not subsided. Any additional donations in this area would be appreciated.
- Hearts for Haiti fundraising dinner and auction in Norwich, scheduled for February 13, 2010, has completely sold out of their 350 tickets.
- Monetary donations from Churches, schools and businesses continue to come into MTH Canada. It is important that this continues fervently upto Friday February 12, 2010 which is the cut off date for the one for one fund matching by CIDA. It is hoped that many of the efforts in this regard with come to fruition over the next week as well as the continued support throughout the upcoming year.
- Air Canada has a pending offer to Mission to Haiti Canada to deliver several air cargo containers into Port au Prince. We pray that the details of this effort will formalize more distinctly in the next several days.
- People continue to pray for the country and the conditions that the people are surviving through. We continue to receive correspondence from people in Haiti describing the living conditions and the psychological impacts of the earthquake.
- Newsletter has been prepared to offer communication to our supporters about what MTH Canada is doing.
- Information and input has been collected to develop a prototype housing unit to help accommodate displaced Haitian families.
- The board is meeting on February 8th to discuss upcoming assessment and team trips to action some of our short and long term goals for Mission to Haiti Canada. Pray for God’s guidance in discerning our steps and direction at this time.
At this time, the following significant short terms needs are being dealt with by Mission to Haiti Canada in Haiti:
- Food distribution has started to the families that are supported through our schools. See the pictures attached to this blog
- Clothing distribution is also ongoing to these families.
- Preliminary information has been received to show some of the damage in the schools for Christa College and SAEDT.
- Bisson has started to gather together some of the families of the students to determine where they are and what their immediate needs are.
- Many prayers are required for Bisson in the efforts that his friends and him are putting forward to help their country out. The children and their families from our sponsorship programme have been scattered around the countryside and throughout the city. This is an immense effort to find out where they are. We are thankful that God is blessing his efforts so far. Pictures are also attached of the gathering of these students.
We continue to be amazed at the volunteers and how they have been touched to help out. God has certainly surrounded this organization with some giving and wonderful people. Let’s continue to serve Him through serving the people of Haiti now and in the upcoming days, months and years.
