The Mission To Haiti Canada assessment team accompanied with 91.5 The Beat Radio Station and Short Term International Medical Missions Abroad (STIMMA) travelled to Haiti today. Flying over the area of Port au Prince, we saw numerous areas spotted with blue tarps and white nylon tents. About 2:30pm we arrived in the Port au Prince Airport that has received significant structural damage to the point that only the recently constructed Jetaway structure is being used. Once we unloaded from the plane, we were transported by bus to a United Nation’s storage building that has been converted to immigration and baggage handling depot. After about two hours we left the makeshift airport terminal to be greeted by our friends Pastor Charles, Bisson and Arie VanEyk.
The short trip from the airport through Port au Prince revealed that many areas around the airport have received damage. Most of the empty fields have been filled with tents and tarps as well as any personal belongings that they might have salvaged from their homes. It certainly does not feel like the same landscape however the people are actively moving through the debris littered streets.
Once at the camp, we had time to unpack the donated hockey bags, tarps, tents and crutches. The donated materials were sorted and repacked to be prepared for re-distribution this weekend. After supper, we discussed our agenda and the work required to set up food distribution for Christa College on Saturday.
We ask that our supporters and people reading the blog continue to pray for our travels this weekend. Our hope is to provide a positive impact to over 300 families this weekend as well as setting up for our 29 person Mission Relief team in April.
