Hi,

I (Jon) am writing this simply to close out our trip for our readers. Thanks to everyone who followed our journey in Haiti and who prayed for us. An additional special thanks to those who wrote us comments. We read them to the group every night after dinner and they were a great encouragement. Knowing so many people were following our trip and praying for us helped us to stay inspired and motivated during the harder moments.

We all made out of Haiti and back home. Some of us (...)

Refreshment. Recharge. Rest. Enjoyment of God’s creation. That was our prayer following breakfast this morning. We got just what we asked for plus a dump truck (hopefully).

We traveled the 40 minutes to the Kaliko resort this morning on a road taking us between the ocean on one side and mountains on the other. It was a peaceful, beautiful drive interrupted only by Jack flagging down a dump truck he saw approaching in oncoming traffic to see if we could buy it. We pulled over and he, (...)

Finally back at
Cabaret!! This was definitely accomplished with lots of prayers!

Sorry for taking a hiatus for the last day or
so. We decided that we would stay a night in the Dominican. More a forced
choice since we got to the border late and it was closed, but had fun spending
a night in another culture. We definitely noticed the differences from its
neighbour Haiti. There are city lights, no  garbage laying around, it has more safety, and
great (...)

Today was filled with the sound of hammers pounding and saws buzzing. Four to seven people worked on assembling and nailing the 2×4’s and plywood into trusses while two others kept busy on the saws. Graham and I (Jon) had saw duty all day and were hard pressed to keep up with the speed of the assembly crew who put in a heroic effort all day long. With about 45 minutes to go before shutdown time, we had enough trusses built for three houses. Still up for a challenge, we decided to try (...)

The sounds of saw blades reverberated through the courtyard this morning as we started making trusses. Smells of cut wood and skin sticky with sweat and coated with sawdust filled our nostrils. As a team we ripped and cut board after board of plywood and 2×4. In a synchronized effort, one person would cut to size, another would measure and mark for smaller cuts and angles, another would cut those, while another marked which of the 10 cuts each board was. These were stacked and organized (...)

Monday. Back to the grindstone. We headed back to Terrier Rouge for our 3rdday of clinic there. Today was Kids day at the clinic! Which meant we got to see all the little kids from the school. All dressed in their school uniforms the children look so beautiful. Each child had a chance to receive a gift whether it be a (...)

If you google “sensory overload”, you will likely bring up pictures of the Cabaret market. All around you people are shouting to hear each other from two feet away. You traverse narrow walkways not quite wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Strangers’ bodies press up against you every couple of seconds. Motorcycles and wheelbarrows loaded with beans and rice and coconuts barrel down the paths at high speeds forcing you to remain vigilant and constantly ready to jump out of (...)

If you count me (Jon) as the paparazzi, we were a red carpet away from being at Oscar Night today. It is that stunning a sight to see the Haitians walking to church in the morning. They dress so beautifully and take such care of their appearance they would not be out of place on an awards show red carpet. The care they take in their appearance would put some celebrity stylists and make-up artists to shame. From the adults to the children, you feel like you are seeing a runway walk of models (...)

Sunday. What a great day to go worship the Lord! This morning we worshipped in Terrier Rouge. The church was filled to capacity. Young and old alike came to praise God for all the blessings he had given then this week. The service started at 10:00 and ended at 12:45. The church had prepared many singing groups for our listening purposes which sang of spreading the gospel by working together. As pastor Charles (...)

Imagine the smoothest road you’ve ever ridden on. Think of what that would be like if it never received a single repair for twenty years. Then, imagine what it would look like if someone dropped grenades on the road every 40 or 50 feet.  Now add steep slopes, blind curves, and piles of garbage and rubble on the sides and sometimes in the middle of the roads. Then imagine what it would be like if there were no set “lanes,” everyone drove as fast as their vehicle allowed, and only one (...)
